Simply put, paint protection film, commonly called PPF, is a clear urethane layer that is applied to the top coat of your Tesla’s paint, effectively forming an invisible barrier between it and the environment.

Once in place, the film bonds with the clear coat of the car’s factory paint and creates another layer of protection. Modern paint protection films are thick enough to provide amazing protection yet thin enough to be inconspicuous and wrap around all edges.

(For example, the XPEL PPF we use at Tint Haus is only 215 microns (0.215 mm.)

This enables it to be 100% transparent to the eye. And since it is still 3 times thicker than your car’s clear top coat, it adds colour depth and is still thick enough to allow “self-healing” – see benefits below.

Paint protection film is most often called PPF, but is also referred to as PPF Wrap and Clear Bra. Whatever you call it (we personally prefer PPF), what matters most is the quality of the film, the care taken to install it and the installation environment.

Paint protection film is not the same as vinyl wrap. Vinyl is the same material that is used to put advertising vehicle wraps on commercial vehicles. It provides a degree of protection but it is thick and coloured – meaning it is not able to showcase your existing paint work or provide a subtle gloss adjustment.

There are several factors to consider when selecting the perfect PPF for your car:

• Protection Level: PPF comes in various thicknesses, offering different levels of scratch and chip resistance.  Consider your needs and driving habits.  For high-impact areas like the front bumper, a thicker film is usually best.
• Self-Healing Properties: Some advanced PPF films, such as XPEL Ultimate Fusion  have the ability to self-heal minor scratches with moderate heat application.  This can be a valuable feature for maintaining a flawless finish.
• Hydrophobic Properties:  The best PPF films are hydrophobic, repelling water and making cleaning easier. This can be particularly beneficial in areas with frequent rain or road grime.

The world of PPF offers a variety of brands and film options. Here’s a breakdown:
