Tesla Paint Protection In A Nutshell

  • Tesla vehicles have notoriously thin paint and are prone to paint chipping
  • Professionally applied coatings protect Teslas from environmental damage
  • Paint protection films and Graphene/Ceramic coatings are cost-effective long-term protection options
  • Most new Tesla owners choose to add protective films or coatings to their paint and/or windows

Tesla Paint Protection Options

If you’ve have just purchased your new Tesla (or are waiting to get it delivered), you are most likely considering how you protect its appearance for the long term. In this article, we take a quick look at the most common Tesla paint protection options, outline the pros and cons, and give you some fantastic examples of Model 3 and Model Y paint protection.

We’ve protected and enhanced thousands of Teslas for their fastidious owners, so we are well-placed to offer you unbiased advice.

Paint Protection Film (PPF)

Simply put, paint protection film, commonly called PPF, is a clear urethane layer that is applied to the top coat of your Tesla’s paint, effectively forming an invisible barrier between it and the environment.

Once in place, the film bonds with the clear coat of the car’s factory paint and creates another layer of protection. Modern paint protection films are very thick enough to provide amazing protection yet thin enough to be inconspicuous and wrap around all edges.

This enables it to be 100% transparent to the eye, while still adding colour depth and allowing “self-healing” – see benefits below.

Nearly all our Tesla owners elect to add ppf to their vehicle – either directly onto the paint or on top of a ceramic or graphene coating. (See below.)

Ceramic Coatings

Another fantastic paint protection option for Tesla paintwork is Ceramic Coating.

A Ceramic coating is a low-maintenance solution for long-lasting paint protection. It guards your Tesla from environmental threats, with new versions like our silica-based coating forming a lasting bond with your car’s paint, eliminating the need for frequent reapplication.

A professionally installed ceramic coating will protect your Tesla from UV radiation, maintain a cleaner appearance, shield your vehicle from harsh chemicals, prevent rust, and just make it easier to maintain.

This is a long-term solution. Our Tint Haus 10H ceramic coating comes with a lifetime warranty against bird/bat droppings, watermarks, paint fade, oxidisation, loss of gloss and tree sap, so you know your Tesla will be protected for life.

Graphene Coatings

Finally, we come to Graphene Coatings. This is the ultimate in Tesla paint coatings.

In short, graphene coatings are ceramic coatings on steroids. They are harder, more durable and slicker. The addition of graphene particles gives it some decisive advantages. Essentially, it looks glossier, is stronger, easier to maintain and lasts even longer.

It is an excellent paint protection option for your Tesla.

6 Reasons To Add Paint Protection To Your Tesla

Adding paint protection films and/or coatings to your Tesla obviously protects your paint from minor scratches and damage, but there are 6 other benefits as well:

  1. Save money
  2. Enhanced Appearance
  3. Resolving Telsa paint chipping
  4. Easier cleaning and maintenance
  5. Custom Fit
  6. Long-Lasting

#1 Save Money

Touching up and repainting Tesla panels from chips, scratches, UV damage, and minor scrapes quickly adds up. Avoiding this saves you money over the life time of your vehicle. In addition it preserves the appearance and keeps it in showroom condition.

#2 Enhanced Appearance

Paint protection coatings and films deliver additional color depth, adding a jaw-droppingly slick appearance to your Tesla.

#3 Dealing with Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Paint Chipping

Unfortunately, many Models are prone to paint chipping due to factory thin paint defective/thin layers in the original paint coat application. However, when applying PPF to your paint, you’ll prevent this.

#4 Ease of Maintenance

Paint protection films and coatings are hydrophobic, meaning water beads quickly and runs off – taking dirt and contaminants with it. Simply put, it makes cleaning your Tesla easier and reduces the need for frequent washing.

#5 Custom Fit

When installing PPF, professional installers use Plotters (essentially automatic cutting machines) to produce the exact sizes for your Tesla’s panels, eliminating potential edge delamination. You also have the option of only protecting key parts of your Tesla – for example, the door edges, hood, bumpers, and mirrors. A best of both worlds approach is to combine a front end PPF package with a Graphene/Ceramic Coating to reduce costs and still provide amazing all round protection.

#6 Long-Lasting Protection

Professionally applied paint protection film often outlasts the average ownership of a vehicle. At Tint Haus for example, we stand by the industry-leading Xpel 10-year warranty.

In other words, paint protection coatings and fees maintain your Tesla’s original paint condition and significantly enhance its appearance.

Caring For Your Tesla With Paint Protection Films And Coatings

All our paint protection coatings and films make it easier than ever to maintain your Tesla. The hydrophobic properties of the coatings prevent dirt, grime, and water spots from sticking to the surface, making it much easier to clean. However, it’s still important to take proper care of your Tesla to ensure its longevity.

Is it hard to maintain PPF on my Tesla?

No, a Tesla with paint protection film is very easy to maintain. Regularly washing your Tesla with a pH-neutral car wash solution and using a microfiber towel to dry it will help prevent water spots and keep your Tesla looking shiny.

Can you wax over my Tesla with paint protection?

We don’t recommend waxing over paint protection films and coatings. First, it is unnecessary as the coatings already provide a protective layer over your Tesla’s paint. Second, it can create a visible buildup of residue along the edges of the coating, potentially compromising your Tesla’s seamless appearance.
